Tranexamic Acid use in Trauma: Effective but not Without Consequences
نویسنده
چکیده
Tranexamic Acid (TXA), a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine, was originally approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1986 to reduce bleeding in hemophiliacs undergoing tooth extraction. It is a potent antifibrinolytic drug that both competitively inhibits the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin by saturating plasminogen’s lysine binding site [1] and by directly inhibiting plasmin; both of which lead to a reduction in the lysis of fibrin clot, fibrinogen, and other procoagulant factors such as V and VIII [2].

Tranexamic Acid in Total Joint Arthroplasty: Efficacy and Safety
Despite improvements in surgical and anesthetic techniques, total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is still associated with substantial blood loss and postoperative anemia (1). A considerable portion of patients with postoperative anemia require blood transfusion, which has been shown to negatively affect the outcome of TJA and predisposes patients to development of surgical site infection and peripr...
متن کاملP-45: Randomized Clinical Trial of Medroxyprogestrone Acetate and Tranexamic Acid in Women with Menorrhagia
Background: Heavy menstrual bleeding is a leading cause of poor quality of life and iron deficiency anemia in reproductive aged women. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and acceptability of Medroxyprogestrone acetate and Tranexamic acid in menorrhagia management. Materials and Methods: Inclusion criteria were: age 20-45 years, regular menses, not using hormonal drugs for previou...
متن کاملCRASH-2 Study of Tranexamic Acid to Treat Bleeding in Trauma Patients: A Controversy Fueled by Science and Social Media
This paper reviews the application of tranexamic acid, an antifibrinolytic, to trauma. CRASH-2, a large randomized controlled trial, was the first to show a reduction in mortality and recommend tranexamic acid use in bleeding trauma patients. However, this paper was not without controversy. Its patient recruitment, methodology, and conductance in moderate-to-low income countries cast doubt on i...
متن کاملImpact of Intravenous Tranexamic Acid on Hemorrhage During Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
Introduction: Endoscopic sinus surgery is a common procedure performed by otolaryngologists. This study evaluated the efficacy of intravenous (IV) tranexamic acid (TA) on hemorrhage in patients undergoing elective endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). Materials and Methods: The present study was performed in 170 patients scheduled for ESS surgery under general anesthesia in order to examine the ef...
متن کاملTranexamic acid in pediatric trauma: why not?
Trauma is a leading cause of death in pediatrics. Currently, no medical treatment exists to reduce mortality in the setting of pediatric trauma; however, this evidence does exist in adults. Bleeding and coagulopathy after trauma increases mortality in both adults and children. Clinical research has demonstrated a reduction in mortality with early use of tranexamic acid in adult trauma patients ...
